Background on Financial Astrology

  • Origin of Astrology

The Babylonians are credited with having developed the field of astrology around 3,000 BC.  While astrology is not typically used by the “common man” as much as it was in ancient times, the elite of the world often appear to give credence to astrological phenomena.  According to the American Federation of Astrologers, “Astrology’s supporters extend from Plato to Copernicus to Sir Isaac Newton…to former First Lady Nancy Reagan, as well as countless business and financial people and others.”  Wall Street financier J.P. Morgan is said to have stated, “Millionaires don’t use astrology, billionaires do.”

  • Origin of Financial Astrology

The field of Financial Astrology can be traced back to 1543 when Christopher Kurz of Antwerp applied astrological dynamics to perform business forecasting.  However, it was not until the turn of the 20th century that the field began to develop in earnest.  H.L Moore, James Mars Langham published some of the earliest research, and David Williams wrote one of the first summaries of the overall knowledge developed in the field to date (i.e., his book “Financial Astrology”).  Over time much more famous names entered the space including Donald Bradley and others (e.g., W.D. Gann, Arch Crawford, Larry Pesavento, and Ray Merriman).

  • Origin of the Bradley Siderograph

Donald Bradley introduced the Bradley Siderograph with the release of his book “Stock Market Prediction” in 1948.  This indicator is based on the overall extent to which astrological events are becoming more or less favorable over time.  The indicator increases or decreases depending upon whether astrological events are overall becoming more or less favorable.  The idea is that favorable or unfavorable astrological events could lead investors to be more bullish, which could be reflected in higher or lower security prices in the global financial markets.

Key Concepts for the Bradley Siderograph

Bradley Turn Dates

  • Although the Bradley Siderograph indicator itself is intended to reflect the overall level of investor sentiment, typically there is a greater focus on "Turn Dates."
  • Turn Dates refer to dates where the Bradley Siderograph changes direction (i.e., a shift from an uptrend to a downtrend).
  • These inflection points represent when we could see a change in investor sentiment, which by extension could result in a change to the current trend of security prices.

Inversions

  • The Bradley Siderograph can experience "inversions" where a top in the Siderograph corresponds to a low in the price of a security.
  • Some securities have an inverse relationship with the overall market (e.g., gold, the VIX, etc.), which can lead to inversions.
  • The accommodative nature of global central banks can also lead to inversions (i.e., because low investor sentiment can result in additional quantitative easing).
  • Therefore, the new Bradley Bars Dashboard has functionality that allows us to flip the indicators upside down to take into account inversions.

The Bradley Bars Dashboard 2.0 Will Allow You to...

  • Graph the Bradley Siderograph Against the Security of Your Choice

See how well a particular security has been following the Bradley Siderograph

  • Bradley Bars

View the newly revised Bradley Bars to see the extent to which a particular security has historically tended to change its direction (e.g., from up to down) upon the occurrence of a Turn Date.

  • Indicator Inversion Adjustment

By typing in the date of your choice you can have the indicators flip upside down to better view security performance against the indicators when there are inversions (i.e., where the indicator makes a high and the security price makes a low).

  • Rate of Change Analysis

Identify the extent to which a security has experienced significant price changes upon the occurrence of a rapid increase or decrease in the indicators (i.e., high Rates of Change in the indicators).

  • Take Advantage of a Longer Time Horizon Perspective

See how a security has performed relative to the Bradley Siderograph over a 5 year and 10 year horizon.
